HER HAIRSTORY
Hair is entirely public; people can hide it on occasion, but it’s always there, a symbol open to interpretation by others about who they deem her to be. For black women, hair clearly represents something about which we have, or have had, issues, and different experiences.
Every black woman has a personal relationship with their hair; it can be either a good or bad relationship. How bad are these relationships? In this body of work, I use impasto to explore the texture, visibility, and struggles of black women. This painting's story explores the experiences of Black women with their natural hair and how each person’s different lives and circumstances directly affect their relationship with their hair.
